2018 Loire harvest: Cabernet Franc

so little rot there is little to do unless
you were badly hit by mildew

Last Tuesday we took a day-trip across from the Cher Valley to see how the 2018 vintage is shaping up in Bourgueil, Chinon and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. In general here it is the same as elsewhere throughout the Loire with producers marvelling at the quality of the grapes. Since we arrived in the Loire on Wednesday 5th September there has been virtually no rain, apart from the odd storm when we were down in the Côte Roannaise, and on most days we have had sunshine and quite often high temperature – at times up to 30˚C. Now as we head into October it is cooler and some nights in Touraine are decidedly fresh.

Last Tuesday picking in Bourgueil and, especially, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil was well underway, although the settled weather was allowing producers to wait for what they judged to be the best time to pick a particular parcel. Some producers were concerned about potential alcohol degrees rising too far – a risk increased by a drying east to north-east wind. Picking in Chinon was less well advanced than in the other two Western Touraine appellations.

Wine tourism: les jeudis du vin de l'AOC Chinon from 13th July to 7th September

Press release from Vins de Chinon @Thursday tastings:

Appellation Chinon expansion now official

Château de Petit Thouars
– one of the best known of the producers joining Chinon

Jean-Martin Dutour
(Baudry-Dutour + President of the Chinon producers' syndicat

Good news for the eight communes to the west of Appellation Chinon and on the south side of the River Vienne – they are now officially part of the appellation. 2016 will be the first vintage when they can use the Chinon classification.

It was back on 15th March 2012 that the Chinon producers accepted the request of these eight communes: Brizay, Candes-Saint-Martin, Chinais, Couziers, Lerne, Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne, Seuilly and Thizay.

Most if not all of these eight communes could have been included in the Chinon appellation in 1937 but chose not to accept apparently because of worries that their taxes might have been higher.

The idiotic reform of AC Touraine that will ban 100% Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc, which are the varieties of choice for producers in these eight communes, pushed them to request them to seek promotion into the Chinon appellation.

Domaine Charles Pain (Chinon) hit by fire – could have been much worse

View of part of the Chinon appellation from Cravant-les-Coteaux
Looking from the Coteau towards the flat gravel vineyards
where Pain has his winery

On Monday night a fire broke out in a house that adjoined Charles Pain's winery in Panzoult. Fortunately the fire was spotted by fellow vigneron Fabrice Gasnier, who quickly raised the alarm.

With the help of other vignerons, neighbours and the fire brigade a substantial part of Charles Pain's production that was threatened by the fire was saved – losing about 300 hl from 800 hl that was under threat.

Charles Pain consistently makes good wine and, although it is good news that the majority of his stock was saved still losing 300 hl (37,500 bottles) will be a heavy blow especially after two short vintages in 2012 and 2013, while 2014 wasn't exactly abundant.

Report on the fire in La Nouvelle République:

Two good Loire Cabernet Francs from Haynes Hanson & Clark

It is good to see a well respected UK merchant listing a range of Loire reds, so it was good to get the Winter 2013-14 list from Haynes Hanson & Clark. They list seven Loire reds. I chose to sample the 2008 Le Clos Guillot, Chinon (£16.90 a bottle or £14.97 by the case) from Bernard Baudry and the 2006 Cuvée Prestige Bourgueil (£15.85 a bottle or £14.02 by the case) from Domaine de la Lande, which also has vines in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil and Chinon.

We tried both on Saturday evening and then finished them on Sunday. Both are typical of their vintages – the 2006 Bourgueil more opulent and softer than the 2008, which while also having attractive fruit is more angular with the tannins and acidity more apparent. Both wines come from the limestone slopes – the Chinon being clay limestone, while the Bourgueil is on limestone and flinty soil.

On the Saturday we paired the wines with a casserole of hare with a rich sauce finished with two squares of 90% chocolate. This matched the 2006 Bourgueil better – its opulence better suited to the richness of the dish. Sunday with a plain roast chicken the result was different as the 2008 shone through, showing more complexity than the Bourgueil.

Both wines are attractive Loire reds – nice to be able buy reasonably mature Loire examples. Of the two, the 2008 may well keep longer than the 2006, although both should easily last another two or three years though the 2008's tannin and acidity is likely to give it greater longevity. In any case the 2006 with its soft black fruits is delicious to drink now.

Haynes Hanson & Clark Ltd also carry from the Domaine des Rochelles – 2012 L'Ardoise, Anjou Rouge and 2008 and 2007 Anjou Villages Brissac (I'd opt for the 2008); 2011 Tuffe, Saumur-Champigny (Château de Hureau) and 2009 Chinon (Domaine de la Noblaie).

My thanks to Haynes Hanson & Clark Ltd for the samples.

Baudry-Dutour – three Chinons

2011 Clos des Marronniers, Chinon, Baudry-Dutour

Here are three Chinons from Baudry-Dutour that I was sent to try – two from the 2011 vintage and one vat sample from 2012. Of the 2011s the rich and velvety Clos des Marronniers is the most impressive – a delicious mouthful, while the Perrières is pleasant enough but lacks the concentration and excitement you might expect from a VV. Overall more in the style of the straight Perrières, although perhaps in time in will take on more weight. The Clos des Marronniers is a 10-hectare plot within the 60-hectare Domaine de la Roncée in the commune of Panzoult.

While not yet bottled the deeply coloured 2012 Morandière looks promising with soft ripe, easy drinking fruit with light tannins in the finish.

Domaine de Noiré (Chinon): summer exhibition

Two of Dominique Speissert's works

We had a quick sneak preview of the summer exhibition at Domaine de Noiré (Chinon), owned by Jean-Max and Odile Manceau, featuring the work of Caroline Bartal and Dominique Speissert. We also tasted a range of the Noiré Chinons starting with the raspberry fruited 2012 Rosé, a saignée.

Then onto the reds commencing with the soft, easy drinking 2012 Soif de tenderesse, which comes from four hectares of vines on flint at the top of the coteaux. Then it was onto the fine, red fruited 2010 Elégance with more concentration and more edge than the Soif. Elégance comes from five hectares planted on the gravel plain of the Vienne. Caractère was the last cuvée tried. This comes from the limestone coteaux. It has a long, gentle maceration and then spends a year in demi-muids. Jean-Max replaces 20% of the barrels every year. Until 2008 he used barriques (225l) but changed to demi-muids as the work marks the wine less and barriques here tend to promote harsh tannins. The 2010 has full, rich fruit with firm structure and tannins. It needs more time in bottle to soften and fully marry.

We also tasted the 2004 caractère, which had a touch of green pepper on the nose, good texture but slightly drying tannins in the finish. However, a success in a difficult year.

2013 Salon des Vins de Loire: Angélique Léon

Angélique Léon

Angélique Léon has six hectares of vines at Savigny-en-Véron. Her vines are planted on deep sand, which is very characteristic of this western part of the Chinon appellation. Angélique took over the family estate, which also grows asparagus, in 2002. The wines from this part of Chinon tend to be light and easy drinking, which her 2011 certainly is. The 2010 has some more concentration and more structure.

Il Mosnel and Château de Petit Thouars

Pas Dosé, Il Mosnel, Franciacorta

Faced with a substantial family incursion yesterday, it seemed sensible to cook something that could be prepared in advance, so I opted for cooking a whole chicken in a sort of coq au vin style. I say sort of coq au vin style as it a variation on a theme rather than a classic French coq au vin as it included hot and sweet paprika, cumin and fenugreek seeds and a little lime pickle to give bite. It did, however, have lardons, onion and mushroom.

As an apéro we dug out the last two bottles of the Pas Dosé Franciacorta from Il Mosnel. Franciacorta hosted the EWBC conference last year in Brescia. The creamy Pas Dosé showed well with attractive fruit and not aggressive despite it being a brut zéro.

2005 Château du Petit Thouars

With the chicken I went for an old faithful: the 2005 Château du Petit Thouars, AC Touraine. 100% Cabernet Franc this had plenty of weight to stand up to the rich and spicy chicken and its sauce. Petit Thouars and a few other estates at the western extremity of Indre-et-Loire will soon be joining the Chinon appellation – well deserved.

Chinon adopts Touraine's ophans!

Château du Petit Thouars, Saint Germain-sur-Vienne

Finally there is good news for the producers growing Cabernet Franc and Chenin in western Touraine, so cruelly orphaned by their heartless parents, AC Touraine, in their insane pursuit of grape purity: they have been adopted by AC Chinon. The producers of Chinon turned good Samaritan on the 15th March when they voted to extend the appellation to the west and accept producers in communes like Lerne, Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne and Seuilly.

The vote at 60% for and 40% against was a comfortable majority if not an overwhelming endorsement. Perhaps there was a feeling that Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne had its chance be part of the Chinon AC when it was created in 1937 but the Mayor at the time turned it down fearing that being part of AC Chinon would push up taxes. The vineyards joining Chinon, some 70 years late, have the same limestone and clay soils as those in communes like Ligre on the south side of the Vienne.

The next move is down to the INAO who will have to delimit the area that can be admitted and revise the appellation's cahier de charge (criteria). This will take a while but producers like Châteaux du Petit Thouars and Trochoire will be part of the Chinon appellation by 2014. Because they grow the traditional varieties – Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc – in the Pays de Rabelais, they were to be excluded from the 'reformed' Touraine appellation under its ludicrous restrictive and regimented rules. Does a surfeit of Sauvignon Blanc drive you insane!?

Flavescence dorée found in Panzoult

Bucolic scene in the centre of the village of Panzoult

Worrying news item from La Vigne yesterday – the first incidence of flavescence dorée, a hopping-insect spread vine disease. La Vigne reports that last October the first vine, a Chenin Blanc, in the Loire to be affected by the disease was found in Panzoult (AC Chinon). In France all vines found to be affected by the disease have to be grubbed up.

The appearance of flavescence dorée in the Loire, which to date has been a problem further south in France, is likely to be a big concern as the Loire already has considerable problems with vine diseases – eutypiose and esca.
