Wines @La Promenade, Le Petit Pressigny on 6th October 2017

Michel Autran, Cap à l'ouest,
Brut Nature, Vin de France
based in Vouvray

Seven of us gathered for a celebratory lunch at La Promenade, Le Petit Pressigny on Friday 6th October. We started with Michel Autran's lovely sparkling wine, which is fermented in barrel and then transferred to bottle. Brightly clean and crisp, this underlines how good Michel's wine have become.

Then for our first courses and the fish we briefly left the Loire for Burgundy and this fine Saint-Aubin. Then we came back to the Loire with a bang with a duo of Foucaults – their Saumur-Champigny 2010 and 2011. It was the 2011 that Xavier Fortin, the star sommelier at La Promenade, had on the list. Very kindly he let us have one of his last 2010s that he had squirreled away someone.

The contrast between the 2010 and 2011 was fascinating. The 2011 is still fairly closed with quite marked acidity in the finish. In contrast the 2010 is a real delight with lovely texture, some opulence, complexity and length. Xavier believes that with more time in bottle the 2011 will equal the 2010. Maybe but I am far from sure.

It was very good to be able to drink these two Foucault wines as you have to wonder whether under the new ownership these wines will become even more expensive.

Clos Cristal (Saumur Champigny) to Robert et Marcel

One of the walls in the Clos Cristal
The vine roots are on the shady side, while
the rest of the vine grows facing the sun

Thankfully a solution has been found to what happens to the famous Clos Cristal, AC Saumur Champigny, albeit that the solution is, for the moment, temporary. Earlier this year the previous management of this historic Clos founded by Antoine Cristal early in the 20th century went bust.

Attempts to find a new management proved to be fruitless and apparently, in the interim, the vines, which escaped the serious frost of 27th April, were not being looked after. Two days ago it was announced that the well run Cave des Vignerons de Saumur, had agreed a two year contract under their trade name – Robert et Marcel – called after the two now deceased cousins – Robert Neau and Marcel Neau – who founded the Cave in 1957. The agreement can be extended to six years. There is a stipulation that the Clos has to be farmed organically.

Loire – a few recently enjoyed bottles

Last night we had our first meal at Le Lézard Vert (Epeigné-les-Bois) under the new ownership. We were favourably impressed by the food and happy with the limited choice of wine where the Closerie de Chanteloup in Touraine Amboise features strongly. I have long been impressed with these wines. We tried their 2014 Sauvignon Blanc that has good concentration of fruit along with ripe acidity – typical of good 2014.

We were particularly impressed by the 2014 Cuvée François Touraine Amboise. All too often this Cuvée is light, weedy and of little interest. In contrast this example is very attractive with a long concentration of rich black fruits – just lovely to drink.

This evening we enjoyed a couple of wines from Château de Villeneuve starting with 2009 Les Cormiers, Saumur Blanc with rich evolved fruit showing the benefit of a few years in bottle as well from this ripe vintage. Ready to drink now but can certainly be kept for a number of years yet.

We followed this with a couple of bottles of 2005 Vieilles Vignes, Saumur Champigny also from Château de Villeneuve. I loved the wonderfully textured, succulent black fruits and now very soft tannins. The 2005 VV went perfectly with a simple roasted Barbary Duck that we had bought this morning in Montrichard Market.

2015 Salon Saumur So Bio – 28th 29th November, Bagneux, Saumur

2015 Salon Saumur So Bio – 28th 29th November, Bagneux, Saumur.  Salle de la Bergère, Rue de la Bergère - 49400 BAGNEUX SAUMUR:
(Details from Matthieu Vallée, Château Yvonne)

Work starting early morning to set up Les Tablées

Today we had a very informative visit to Fontevraud Abbey followed by lunch outside with the volunteers helping to put Les Grandes Tablées together.

Trio of Loires recently enjoyed

2003 Moelleux Vouvray Domaine de la Taille aux Loups

Rich honeyed concentration from the heatwave year, this sweet Vouvray from Domaine aux Taille aux Loups worked well as an apéro – just a glass or so – but also with pheasant cooked in cream and apple and finished with a little Calvados and some more cream. Long finish but not especially complex, although certainly would have aged for decades if I hadn't pulled the cork.

2013 Pierre de la Grange Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie, Domaine Pierre Luneau Papin

Attractive, fresh, lemony, saline young Muscadet from Domaine Pierre Luneau Papin. This spends seven months on its lees before bottling. We enjoyed this with simply fried halibut steaks. It also worked well as a contrast with a starter of scallops and black pudding also a good, refreshing apéro. I'm sure would have been perfect with shellfish including oysters.

Secret des Vignes 2012 Saumur Champigny, Ackerman

Secret des Vignes 2012 Saumur Champigny (11.90€) is the first of three samples of the Secret des Vignes sent to me from Ackerman. 2012 is not the easiest Loire vintage and while this shows some of the characteristic acidity of 2012 it has impressive concentration of black fruits. Still youthful though drinkable now it would benefit by being left for another year or two. The back label suggests this Champigny could age for 5-10 years, which given its concentration (for the year) is a fair estimate. Also in this series is a Saumur Blanc and a Coteaux du Saumur, which I will be trying over the next few days. The 2012 Saumur Champigny was a promising start.
