London's continuously changing skyline – 2017 v 2005

 Around the Elephant a new group of high rise towers developing – 

a counterpoint to the City and Canary Wharf 
(2nd March 2017)

London's skyline has recently been changing with dramatic speed as these comparisons with 2005 (see below) show. The biggest changes have been in the City, around London Bridge – notably with the Shard, and most recently around the Elephant/towards Blackfriars.

were the two dominant City towers.

Now both are overshadowed by taller buildings

The Shard and the City of London

Much of last Saturday was a foul day with heavy rain. However, late afternoon it cleared up with a remarkable shaft of sunshine running from west to east through the centre of London and out to docklands leaving much of the rest of London in shadow.

It is easy to forget how quickly London's skyline is changing. This photo was taken only eight and half years ago (September 2005) yet the same scene looks completely different today. Then the two dominant buildings were the NatWest tower and the recently built Gherkin. They stood distinct uncluttered by any other neighbouring buildings. Today that has totally changed with the Shard at London Bridge easily, for the moment, the most dominant building, while the Gherkin is now hemmed in with other buildings and no longer its old distinct self as it is more difficult to find a clear view of its bulbous shape.
