Euro Gusto (27th-30th November) and Rock aux Caves 2009 (12th December)

Euro Gusto:
Last night I received an enthusiastic message about this event from from Aymeric Hilaire, Vins Melaric (Saumur). Fortunate that they included me in the send as this is the first I've heard of Eurogusto.

Bonne lecture !

There are various seminars as well as an opportunity to taste wines from across France and Europe. See here.

Recently tasted: Serge Dagueneau et Filles 2008 Pinot Noir

Serge Dagueneau et Filles are best known for their Pouilly-Fumé from Les Berthiers, Saint-Andelain. However they also have 1.5 ha of vines in the Coteaux Charitois at Saint-Lay. Some 30 years ago Serge planted a number of different varieties there including Pinot Noir – he wanted some red wine. They also have some Pinot Beurot, a synonym for Pinot Gris, planted there.

The 2008 has attractive red fruits and is delicious and easy to drink now – another example of the lighter, but not weedy, Loire Pinot Noir that drinks very well when it is young. Not sure that there is much point is keeping it – better to enjoy the fruit while it is young. A good match with fish. Serve slightly chilled during the summer.

Finally...AC Saumur Le Puy Notre Dame!
Although the INAO accepted AC Saumur le Puy Notre Dame on 14th June 2006, it took a further three years and more for the French Minister of Agriculture to find his pen to sign the décret, which was done on 14th October 2009. Apparently the reform of the agrément system held things up.

The new AC is for reds only and covers 17 communes roughly centred on Le Puy Notre Dame. These are: Brézé, Brossay, Cizay la Madelaine, Distré, Doué la Fontaine, Epieds, Le Puy Notre Dame, Les Ulmes, Le Vauldenay, Les Vergers sur Layon, Meigné, Montreuil Bellay, Berrie, Les Trois Moutiers, Pouancay, Saix and Saint Léger de Monbrillais. The new appellation stretches nearly 30 kilometres from Doué la Fontaine in the west to Les Trois Moutiers in the east.

23 producers from the 17 communes covered by the AC will be making 3000 hls of the 2009 vintage, which will bear the new appellation. The late Henri Aupy started the campaign to get the appellation in 1975. Under the rules the base yield is 50 hl/ha, which is 20% less than that permitted for straight AC Saumur, with a maximum tolerance to 56hl/ha. Weedkiller can be used in part of the vineyard but not across the whole area. The wine cannot be put on the market before 1st June following the vintage. The producers are hoping that the wine will be priced between 6-10€ a bottle. (See l'anjou agricole (22.10.09).

CRM picking@Le Puy Notre Dame: 3rd October 2009

I don't want to make a big thing of this but it cannot surely be mere coincidence that Jim's Loire and friends spent half a morning picking Chenin Blanc (yes I know the new appellation is for red wine) at Le Puy Notre Dame on Saturday 3rd October and just eleven days later the new décret became official.

Back in the Loire

A28: A brief glimpse of Le Loir@Château-du-Loir

Drove down yesterday in bright sunshine once we approached the Loire Valley. It is always fascinating traveling through France in early springtime to see how much more advanced the trees etc. come as you move southwards. In northern France it was still winter bleak with light sign of green, whereas from Le Mans southwards it became greener and with more blossom in evidence. Of course if we had carried on down to Bordeaux it would have become still greener. However, even down in the Loire London is probably more advanced due to its special micro-climate, doubtless helped by the pollution. I believe that you have to go as far south as Lyon to find a major city that has a higher average temperature than London.

Heading towards Tours: heavy traffic on the A28

Very enjoyable relaxed dinner at friends starting with the 2007 Varière Coteaux de l'Aubance, whose fresh, citric character makes this a good aperitif – not over sweet. Then I confidently mistook a 2006 Bourgogne Aligoté for a minerally Sauvignon Blanc. I did a little better with the red thinking it was Côt, which is was in part. The rest being Cabernet Franc and the whole was the 2006 Cuvée Pif from the Clos Roche Blanche. We had an excellent but simple first course – fresh local goats' cheese whizzed up with fresh basil to make a few creamy mouthfuls. Delcious.

Unfortunately today is showery and pretty miserable and the forecast for the rest of this week is not very special. Still the ground here is quite dry, so there hasn't been a lot of rain recently.
