Newenden: River Rother breaks its banks

Following the heavy rain and strong winds on Monday through to early Tuesday morning, there is widespread flooding in southern England. Although the photos of the 'Newenden Lake' look spectacular, the fields flooded are water meadows. They are, however, planted with wheat which should be OK providing the water subsides in the next seven days or so.

Rural Kent joins Third World

Staying on the Kent and Sussex borders this weekend. Already had two power cuts today – one just before 11am which lasted about half and hour and one around 1.30 pm that last 20 minutes. Apparently in these parts this is quite a regular occurence when it rains!

Late flash (or would be if we had power!): third power cut of day just before 6pm for about another 20 minutes. Dinner delayed!

Snowy orchards in Kent and other scenes

A change from scenes of vineyards here are a couple of shots of an apple orchard in Kent taken on Wednesday 6th January 2010 during the cold, snowy spell that has been affecting the UK since around 17th December last year. This has certainly been the most prolonged and severe period of snow that I can remember since the winter of 1962/63 when it started to snow on Boxing Day 1962 and, if I remember rightly, didn't clear until early March 1963.
