Spring is finally here – so too are scams targeting French producers

Last Thursday (11th April) when I gave my talk on the UK market at Les Rencontres Nationales des Vignerons Indépendants in Epernay I warned of the French producer scam. In this long-running scam, fraudsters contact French producers stealing the identity of legitimate companies and their employees.   

The warning was well-timed as within a week (17th April) of my talk a Champagne producer received two emails (see below) sent by a fraudster pretending to be the manager (a Steven Person) of the Anchor Inn at Lower Froyle in Hampshire.  

However a quick check shows that the two phone numbers and the fax given by the fraudster are all for mobiles – no landline given, which naturally the real Anchor Inn has. Also there is one crucial difference between the true email address of the Anchor Inn – the false address includes a hypen, which the real address does not have.

When I contacted the Anchor Inn they confirmed that the emails were false and nothing to do with them: 'I can confirm with you this is nothing to do with us and no one by that name works here.' The so called Manager – Steven Person – is the fraudster's invention.

Trash is best place for emails like this. Legitimate UK companies would never contact French producers in this manner.   

Another scam email

Herewith a new scam email purporting to come from the long established and reputable Frank Stainton Wines:

Suite à une visite sur votre site, nous avions eu l'occasion de prendre connaissance de vos activités.

Nous sommes de ce fait intéressé par un partenariat avec vous en tant que distributeur de vos différents millésimes sur l'Angleterre et en Ecosse.

Étant situé au Royaume Unis, nous voulions savoir si vous faites de la vente à l'export.

Nous sommes donc dans l'attente de votre réponse de sorte à passer d'éventuelles commandes que nous livrerons dans des complexes hôtelier, restaurants, casinos et bars mais aussi nos distributeurs qui s'étendent sur nos pays de vente.

Nous vous signifions que nous disposons d'un numéro d'assise et tva pour l'enlèvement par notre transporteur.

Merci de nous indiquer votre mode de règlement vu le fait que nos règlements sont à 30 jours fin du mois par virement bancaire.

There are several giveaways in this email:

It is Frank Stainton not Franck
The address given is the company's old address
The phone and fax are both mobiles and the email is a hot mail address.

The correct address details:

Eric Thorman rumbled again!

Delighted to learn of another French producer, who was contacted by Eric Thorman, but who became suspicious because Thorman wanted to order a large quantity of wine without tasting it and said he would pay in 30 days – 60 days is more customary. She became even more suspicious when he kept phoning her and was clearly in a great rush to get the wine. Eventually she must have found the warning about Eric Thorman's scams on Hervé Lalau's Chroniques Vineuses.

Very happy that the message about this fraudster – Eric Thorman – is getting out.

Another example of this fraud/scam just sent in by a leading Bordeaux négociant company. Full of spelling mistakes, this is a round robin email which has probably been sent to many producers. The telephone and fax numbers are mobiles. Jefferson Dee James, who is most unlikely to work for Wine Inns Ltd of Belfast, is apparently happy to place a substantial order without tasting the wines.
