France's Regional Elections: 2nd round in the Loire – Forez to Tours

It is fascinating to look at yesterday's election results across the Loire and, especially, regarding a selection of wine communes. 

It is no surprise that as France's longest river La Loire straddles four of France's 15 Regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val-de-Loire and Pays de la Loire. It could even be five if we include Bretagne. This time the spoils are equally divided with the Right winning Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Pays de la Loire and the Left taking Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Centre-Val-de-Loire.

It is difficult to find patterns here, except long-standing contrasts appear to be confirmed. Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire are clearly separated by more than the Loire. Sancerre is strongly right but with the National Front a distant third. In contrast Pouilly-sur-Loire and its adjacent communes are firmly National Front. 

Equally Vouvray and Montlouis, as so often, go their separate ways – Montlouis clearly Left with Vouvray clearly to the Right. 

      

Take the contrast between the communes of Quincy and Brinay – less than six kilometres apart. In Quincy the National Front occupies first place with left in third place. Up the road in Brinay the positions are reversed – Left leading and the National Front in third place.

Perhaps the differing voting patterns reflect the diversity of Loire wines!

French elections: Epeigné-les-Bois leads – France follows

Epeigné-les-Bois: result of the 2nd round

 François Bonneau (Socialist) comfortably won the second round of the French regional elections held at Epeigné-les-Bois yesterday.

Henri Novelli (UMP): 64
Philippe Loiseau (Front National): 26
Total votes cast: 186
Bonneau's share of the vote: 51.6%
Novelli's share of the vote: 34.4%

The result across France mirrored Eepigné's with the Socialists taking 52% of the vote and Sarkozy's UMP party on 35%. This leaves the UMP in control of only one of France's 22 regions – Alsace. Following the Epeigné result (and probably influenced by the result elsewhere) French Prime Minister François Fillon is reported to be considering resigning.
