Update on fraudsters from UbiFrance

(UbiFrance is French government body for promoting French exports)

Latest news on the fraudsters, who claim to work for legitimate wine companies, try to order wine and then disappear with the wine but without paying.

'Just wanted to inform of you of the latest scam apparently the initial emails seem to come from Slovakia, hence the SK at the end of the email address.

Currently the fraudsters are using the following names and companies:

Eric Thorman of Thorman Hunt or Berry Bros or Richards Walford and Co Ltd, John Palmer of Alcohols Limited, Paul Avines of Thorman Hunt or Berry Bros, Peter Rubell of Berry Bros & Rudd, Dave Harris of Wine and Beer World Limited, and Jefferson Dee James of Wine Inns Ltd Belfast.'

plus a new entrant – a Dave Green who claims to work for Hayman Barwell Jones (HBJ Wines). This company went into administration on 15th January 2009 and is now called Wine Company Realisations Ltd.

Eric Thorman rumbled again!

Delighted to learn of another French producer, who was contacted by Eric Thorman, but who became suspicious because Thorman wanted to order a large quantity of wine without tasting it and said he would pay in 30 days – 60 days is more customary. She became even more suspicious when he kept phoning her and was clearly in a great rush to get the wine. Eventually she must have found the warning about Eric Thorman's scams on Hervé Lalau's Chroniques Vineuses.

Very happy that the message about this fraudster – Eric Thorman – is getting out.

Another example of this fraud/scam just sent in by a leading Bordeaux négociant company. Full of spelling mistakes, this is a round robin email which has probably been sent to many producers. The telephone and fax numbers are mobiles. Jefferson Dee James, who is most unlikely to work for Wine Inns Ltd of Belfast, is apparently happy to place a substantial order without tasting the wines.

Eric Thorman: changes employer

The ever industrious Eric Thorman appears to have changed his employer. Only last week Eric was working with Thorman Hunt, now he is claiming in this email (see below) forwarded to me by a Loire producer to work for Richards Walford. This is, of course, nonsense. Loire expert Richard Kelley MW looks after the region for Richards Walford, who work through personal contact often over many years. Eric Thorman has nothing to do Richards Walford. Equally he has nothing to do with Thorman Hunt.

Eric Thorman is a busy boy!

Despite someone being imprisoned for scamming French producers from the UK, I have recently received messages from French producers who have been contacted by email by Eric Thorman (nothing to do with the highly regarded UK wine importers – Thorman Hunt Ltd).

Eric Thorman and others, who attempt the same scam, attempt to get producers to accept their wine orders. Unfortunately payment is extremely unlikely and the wine will just disappear.
