La Dive Bouteille 2013 – a new discovery in Vouvray: Mathieu Cosme

Château de Brézé: La Dive tasting in cellars underneath the château

Matthieu Cosme: Vouvray

At La Dive Bouteille tasting at Château de Brézé on the Sunday (3rd) before the start of the Salon des Vins de Loire I was impressed with the Vouvrays from Mathieu Cosme (Domaine de Beaumont) – a new discovery for me. He has 13 ha and started in 2005. I liked the purity of his wines.

This is a brief post as I'm heading off to Umbria today for the Wine Lovers anniversary, where we will doubtless elect a new Wine Lovers pope!

Loire 2013: River Thouet floods

Château de Brézé in the round

We headed over to La Dive Bouteille tasting in Château de Brézé – disappointingly warm and comfortable after all the warnings that on previous years it has been colder in the cellars than the North Pole. Also from what I tasted in the Loire there were considerably fewer completely off the wall wines than I expected. This was also true at the Renaissance tasting on the Saturday.

On the way back from Brézé to Angers we tried to do the cut through from Chacé to the Doué road but this was impossible as the Thouet has flooded and the road is well under water.

No way through!

Reflections on 8 Years of Wine Blogging by Alder Yarrow
'Eight years ago, I decided that instead of giving my friends the same advice over and over again about my favorite wines and restaurants, I would start a blog -- both so that I would have someplace to send them, and so that I could learn about what a blog was and how it worked.

And that, as they say, was the first day of the rest of my life. I've been writing about wine almost every day since then, pausing only to go on my honeymoon, hang out with my new baby girl, and go fishing in Alaska this past August.

It's been quite a ride.'

Yves Lambert (Domaine St Just, Saumur) dies

Arnaud and Yves Lambert@2009 Salon des Vins de Loire

I was very sorry to get the news this evening that Yves Lambert, Domaine de Saint-Just (Saumur and Saumur-Champigny) died of cancer yesterday.

Sadly I'm not entirely surprised as I was shocked to see Yves at this year's Salon des Vins de Loire – he was very thin, gaunt and clearly unwell. Yves explained that he had had cancer but that it was stable and he was improving.

I will remember Yves both as a fine producer of Saumur and Saumur-Champigny at Domaine de Saint-Just and as a generous and intelligent man with great warmth and energy. He was in at the beginning of a new adventure with vineayrds of Château de Brèze, which he and Arnaud, his son, took over running in 2009.

Les Obsèques se tiendront lundi 4 juillet à 15h00 à l'église de Saint Cyr en Bourg (49260).

My sincere condolences to Yves' family.

Château de Brézé: two views

Château de Brézé and its vines: late June 2006

Château de Brézé and its vines: 5th November 2007

Trying to sort out photos to get them in some sort of order. Two photos of the vines of Château de Brézé, now looked after by Yves and Arnaud Lambert of Domaine Saint-Just. Similar view but contrasting seasons.
