La Coulée de Serrant: joint statement – Nicolas Joly and Eric Morain + reaction from fédération viticole de l'Anjou

Nicolas Joly

Eric Morain with Olivier Cousin: Angers October 2013

A joint statement from Nicolas Joly and Eric Morain, his lawyer

"I think the reasons given by Nicolas Joly for leaving Interloire are a little false. The Interprofession doesn't just communicate about wine but it also funds research, the collection of statistics etc. as well as defending the Loire appellations. I don't understand why Mr Joly objects to paying the small subscription per bottle when his wine sells for 60-70€ a bottle.

Furthermore we will now be introducing a two-tier subscription system with producers having the option of paying less if they don't want to fund the promotional side of Interloire's work."

Update from Nicolas Joly 26th March 2015

(Brief translation: The Federation Anjou organised a meeting between Interloire and Nicolas Joly. An agreement was reached. If the promises of Interloire are kept Coulée de Serrant will remain in Interloire. If not C de S will leave next year.)

Nicolas Joly takes the Coulée de Serrant out of Interloire

Nicolas Joly

Following a court battle over his refusal to pay his cotisation (subscription) to Interloire, Nicolas Joly (Coulée de Serrant) has decided to take the Coulée de Serrant – the seven hectare AC in the heart of Savennières – out of Interloire, the administrative and promotional organisation for many of the appellations from Muscadet to Touraine. The Joly family are the sole owners of Coulée de Serrant.

On the 3rd February 2015 Joly was ordered by the Tribunal d'instance d'Angers (the same court used for the Olivier Cousin case) to pay Interloire between 4000-5000 euros. Joly objects to paying his cotisation because he says it is used to promote industrial wines.

Three larger appellations have already left Interloire – Bourgueil, Fiefs Vendéens and Montlouis. Leaving Interloire will mean that the Interprofession will no longer promote the Coulée de Serrant. As Nicolas Joly already has a strong media presence, this is unlikely to be any hardship.  This is clearly demonstrated by the coverage of this story in Le Parisien and Le Figaro.

The AC may even disappear from Interloire's map of the area.

From Le Figaro (10.2.2015):

RAW wine fair: date for your 2013 diary – 19-20 May

The Truman Brewery in Brick Lane

Isabelle Legeron MW

From Isabelle Legeron MW:
RAW's  2nd edition of its artisan wine fair in Spitalfields, Central London: 19th-20th May:

'Located a short distance from Liverpool Street, Shoreditch High Street (Overground station) and the City, RAW 2013 has a lot to live up to. Described as “pure, unabashed taste bud titillation”, “buzzing”, and “unmissable” by those who attended in 2012, this 2nd edition certainly has a lot to live up to. We are determined to make RAW 2013 even more exciting and thought-provoking than the last.

The new dates for your diary are:
Sunday 19th & Monday 20th May 2013. As last year, we have timed the fair to coincide with the London International Wine & Spirit Fair so that wine professionals already attending the trade fair in Excel will also be able to explore the extraordinary world of fine natural wine while in town.

It's not just the wines that are unusual!

• Sunday will be open to all – trade and consumers alike.
• Monday will be open to the trade during the day and will be open to consumers in the early evening. Details to be announced in due course.

If you are a grower or importer keen to join in, and your wines comply with RAW’s Charter of Quality, then please do get in touch.

Similarly if you are a restaurant or artisan food producer who would like to join in, let us know.
For everyone else, watch this space. We have lots of exciting plans for 2013.
For a sample of last year’s event, why not check out our video online

For those of you who have not yet had the pleasure of getting to know RAW, here's a bit about us:

RAW is a two-day celebration of some of the best natural wine talent in the world, featuring some 200 growers and over 1000 wines.
RAW is committed to empowering all wine drinkers through real, informed choice and transparency.
RAW is unprocessed. It is about truth, authenticity and frank wine talking, but most of all it's about showcasing really good wine.
Who is behind the fair?
RAW is an Isabelle Legeron MW creation dedicated to showcasing the extraordinary men and women who produce fine, natural wine. We are a totally independent wine event open to all.
A fair for professional wine buyers too!
RAW is a fair for both the general public and professionals. It showcases wines already imported into the UK, as well as new discoveries. Some of the artisans attending will be actively looking for an importer and any buyers looking for new producers will be able to explore those 'seeking representation' online and in the fair catalogue.

It is not yet known whether Isabelle will again be going head to head with the naturists from Guildford – Douglas Wregg, Eric Narioo and the rest of Les Caves de Pyrène equipe.

Nicolas Joly seeks work in Sancerre

Spotted in the offices of the Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins du Centre this week: M. Joly recherche travail dans les vignes. Sceptics may point out that Nicolas Joly's landline in Anjou begins 02.41. However, the green symbol is surely the clincher – Nicolas will soon be amongst the silex and caillottes of Sancerre.

Notes on a Loire trip from Oswaldo Costa

Coulée de Serrant: grapes in late September

Some fine notes here on The Wine Lovers Forum on a recent trip to the Loire in mid-October by Oswaldo Costa. Includes visits to René Mosse, Richard Leroy, Jo Pithon and Coulée de Serrant – very sorry to hear that Nicolas Joly apparently suffered a slight stroke recently and trust that he will soon be fully recovered.*

Read the notes here. My thanks to Albertan Bob for informing me about this post.

Nicolas Joly

* Very pleased to hear from Nicolas that it was nothing serious:

Talking Biodynamics with Nicolas Joly – Part II

The second and concluding part of Gary's interview with Nicolas Joly is now available:

During the course of the interview Nicolas is strong on philosophy and theory but is interestingly vague when asked some specific questions like who else owns part of the La Roche-aux-Moines and who else do you think is making good wine in Savennières. To be fair Gary Vaynerchuk tends to be too quick to interrupt. Nicolas manages to remember that Pierre Soulez used to own part of the Roche aux Moines but fails to mention his neighbour, Madame Laroche, who he once took to court over the use of the name Roche aux Moines. Nor does he mention Claude Papin, who also has vines there.

Well worth reading in conjunction with Gary and Nicolas' chat is wine doctor Chris Kissack's updated profile of La Coulée de Serrant. Chris gives careful consideration to the divided opinions over the perceived quality of the estate's wines and looks at the wine-making methods used. It would be interesting to see what the results would be if someone like Noël Pinguet or Jean-Pierre Chevallier were put in charge of wine-making at La Coulée.

Talking biodynamics with Nicolas Joly (part 1)

Nicolas with Ales Kristancic, remarkable maker of sparkling wine in Slovenia@St Johns, Smithfield, London for the Circle of Wine Writers annual dinner in 2006

This is well worth watching:
Gary Vaynerchukt (The Wine Connoisseur) interviews Nicolas Joly (on YouTube): 26 minute clip. Although I'm not sure that calling Nicolas a 'certifiable wine legend' was the happiest choice of words.
