Château Bredurière, Moutiers-sur-le-Lay: recommended B&B in Fiefs Vendéens

We decided that it was too far to drive down from the Cher Valley to the Fiefs Vendéens and back in a day. It would have meant at least six hours driving. Instead we looked for a chambre d'hôte and found Château Bredurière in the commune of Moutiers-sur-Le Lay, adjacent to Mareuil-sur-Lay the base of J. Mourat. 

We had a very good stay there, which included a three course evening meal and a copious breakfast. In all we paid 154€, which included wine. Ans and Bart have been running the château since the beginning of January. Previously they had been in the Aveyron. The château is owned by a Dutchman, who makes commercial videos. Ans is also from Holland, while Bart is Belgian. They are very welcoming and friendly. The château is very peaceful with only the occasional dog barking to break the silence. It is about 35-40 minutes from the nearest point on the Atlantic coast and anyway there is a good sized heated salt water swimming pool at the property.    

We will certainly stay there again when we next explore this part of the Fiefs Vendéens

Readers of Jim's Loire may well be aware of our enthusiasm for Jacky Dallais' wonderful restaurant – La Promenade in Le Petit Pressigny. Hitherto we have virtually always had to have lunch there as it is around 60 kilometres from Epeigné-les-Bois to Le Petit Pressigny. We have stayed in the area a couple of times but it was never a great success. The first time must have been nearly 20 years ago in a chambre d'hôte just across from La Promenade. The other time was in a château chambre d'hôte in the next village – La Celle Guenand – which meant a four kilometre walk along the road.

Fortunately the original chambre d'hôte opposite the restaurant has been completely revamped, having changed hands a couple of times. The very welcoming present owners – Valérie et Loïc Bobon, who are originally from La Mayenne, took over about a year ago at Au fil de l'Aigronne. We booked the downstairs suite for last night – 70€ including breakfast for the two adjoining rooms with shared facilities, so were able to enjoy the customary excellent meal at La Promenade without having to worry about a long journey home that evening.
    

I'm sure this won't be the last time we opt to spend the night in Le Petit Pressigny at the Bobon's B&B. Amongst the other people staying there last night was a couple from Tours, who hearing how good La Promenade is, caught the bus that runs from Tours to Tournon Saint-Martin. They had dinner at La Promenade last night and were planning to have Sunday lunch there before heading back to Tours on the bus that passes around 5.30pm.

Chambre d'hôtes in Bouaye

 On Tuesday night we stayed in a small chambre d'hôtes in the centre of Bouaye run by Maryvonne Sidney at 11 rue de la Gare – Le Logis (tel: 02.40.65.48.28). She has two clean, simple and very reasonably priced rooms  at just 46€ for two people including breakfast – a very good breakfast as she insisted on making us scrambled eggs. Maryvonne was a delightful and thoughtful hostess.

The previous evening we ate at La Grignotière on the eastern outskirts of Bouaye. The restaurant specialises in grills. We drank a rich and concentrated bottle of 2006 Saumur Champigny, Château de Chaintres. This was Krishna Lester's last vintage and it is currently drinking well.

In praise of chambres d'hôtes

Château d'Yseron

Over the past few years the French have really fallen in love with le bed & breakfast. Very often they offer much bettern value and a more interesting experience than staying in a hotel. Prices start from around 50€ for a room for two with breakfast normally included in the price. You can, of course, pay considerably more if you stay in some of the châteaux chambres d'hôtes.

Run by Micaela and Sue, this is another place that I have visited but not stayed at. La Grande Maison is between Doué la Fontaine and le Puy Notre Dame and I’m sure is a great place to stay especially if you intend to take advantage of your hosts local wine knowledge and contacts.

Chambres d'hôtes run by another couple of Parisian refugees, deep in the peaceful northern Berry but ideally situated for those wishing to dine at the excellent Le Lièvre Gourmand in nearby Vailly-sur-Sauldre. Just one drawback – all the rooms are on the first floor and the stairs are steep without banisters or support, so difficult for someone with reduced mobility. Over the past day or so have been organising a week's trip in August to some of the Loire's upper vineyards – will certainly include some vineyard visits but it is also to get to know the area better. Most of the time we'll be in chambres d'hôtes, so I hope to have some more addresses to add to this list.

It is certainly too far to drive back from the Cap d'Agde to London all in one day, so this was a good opportunity to make a first and very belated visit to William Page's famous Le Lièvre Gourmand in Vailly-sur-Sauldre. Le Lièvre's website recommended chambres d'hôtes is La Gaudière in the nearby village of Dampierre-en-Crot. This charming and very peaceful bed and breakfast is just to the east of the little village and is run by Catherine and Dominique Friedlander. They are another couple who, fed up with the pressures of life in Paris, opted for the peace of the French countryside. They sold up and moved here in August 2003 in the middle of the heatwave. They have created four bedrooms in a converted barn and there is plenty of space to wander around as there are seven hectares attached to the property.


Dampierre-en-Crot is five kilometres from Vailly, so it's just over a five-minute drive from La Gaudière to Le Lièvre Gourmand. For breakfast we had freshly picked cherries from Friedlander's garden along with homemade jams – plum, apricot and myrtille. All of this for 50€ for bed and breakfast for two – remarkable value! Unfortunately their bedrooms are not ideal for anyone with restricted mobility as they are all on the upper floor.
