Bourgueil invades Tours: more photos from 17.3.12
James Petit
When I arrived in Tours last Saturday around 10am for Bourgueil's annual invasion of the city it was decidedly cool and difficult to really taste young Bourgueil with much pleasure. Certainly Saturday was nothing like the day before when temperatures climbed to an unseasonal high of around 24˚C! Fortunately over the course of the morning it gradually warmed up and the wines naturally became more approachable and expressive.
With some 50 producers present – I managed to taste with about forty – the overall standard was pretty impressive. There were a few wines which were rustic and 'old style' with unripe fruit and a marked green pepper character. Certainly the general standard was higher than you will find at a similar tasting of wines from Vouvray or Touraine-Amboise, for instance.
Once I finished tasting I grabbed some pics of some of the vignerons and thought that I had noted who was who but now, a few days later, there are a number whose names I can't remember. They will have to remain anonymous until someone can identify them for me please. Apologies for this incompetence! (Old age creeping in?? CRM)
