Loire – climate in July: stats

 

La Loire near Ussé

Throughout the Loire July has seen below average rainfall but above average temperatures and sunshine, although no records have been broken. Anjou and the Pays Nantais have had little rain, while around Bourges and Tours the July rainfall has been close to the norm. The wettest day of the month was Bastille Day (14th July). The stats come from Météo France. The average is for the period 1991 to 2000.

Not too far off the record for July sunshine July 2006 of 285h

Angers (Beaucouze)

Rainfall

8.4 mm of which  4.8 mm fell on July 14^th

The average rainfall is 46.6 mm. Although July's rainfall is low. It is far from the record low of July 1967 when only 2.7 mm fell.

259 hours against an average of 223.

49mm  of which most fell on 5th, 11th, 14th and 26th.

53.4mm is the average.

Bourges

56.6mm compared the average of 59.8 mm. markedly wetter than the western Loire with 10 days when rain fell compared the norm of 8.

27.3˚C to an average of 25.5˚C.

Sunshine

268 hours compared to the norm of 237.

But no records here as the least sunshine in July was 189 hours in July 2000 and the most being 309 hours in July 2006. 

January-April: round up of 2010 Loire weather

The Loire looks to have escaped frost this year

 Although it may well be tempting fate, it is worth noting that April 2010 has ended in the Loire without any serious frost damage. Although frost can occur up to the end of May, the level of risk tends to be much lower once May is reached. Over the last 20 years the devastating frosts have been in April: 1991 – 21st/22nd and 2008: 7th. Furthermore the forecast (Météo France) shows a mild week ahead, so there is a good chance that the Loire will be frost-free this year.

Hopefully hail will also be less of a problem this year – fingers crossed.

Stats for the first four months of the year from Météo France shows that 2010 has had a very slightly drier start than 2009 with 212mm of rain compared to last year's 220.

The wettest day this year was 1st March when 16.4mm fell, while the wettest last year was 1st May when 37.6mm fell.
 

Sunshine

2010 has also seen more hours of sunshine (607) compared to the first four months of 2009 (563):

Before rushing to conclude that 2010 might be a great vintage it is worth remembering that April was very hot and sunny in 1987 and 2007 and then went downhill from there.

L’hiver « climatologique » (décembre-janvier-février) 2009-2010 a été froid, fréquemment neigeux et globalement peu ensoleillé.

Avec une température moyenne sur la France située 1,2 °C sous la normale* saisonnière, l’hiver 2009-2010 se positionne parmi les hivers froids, mais non exceptionnels, de ces dernières années. Aussi froid que son prédécesseur, mais plus doux que l’hiver 2005-2006, il s’est cependant singularisé par la succession de trois vagues de froid bien marquées mi-décembre, début janvier et mi-février.

Ces basses températures associées à un temps plutôt perturbé ont favorisé de fréquentes chutes de neige en plaine sur l’ensemble du pays. En terme d’occurrences de neige, l’hiver 2009-2010 se positionne ainsi comme l’un des plus neigeux de ces trente dernières années. Toujours en raison du froid persistant, la neige a fréquemment tenu au sol. Les épaisseurs ont été parfois conséquentes, mais cependant assez loin des records historiques. Malgré ces chutes de neige répétées, les quantités d’eau recueillies durant cet hiver sont restées limitées. Seules les régions méditerranéennes ont connu des précipitations largement excédentaires. A un degré moindre, les pluies ont aussi été supérieures à la normale de la Bretagne au Nord-Pas-de-Calais ainsi que sur l’Alsace. Ailleurs, le bilan est proche de la normale, voire déficitaire.

L’ensoleillement a été nettement déficitaire sur une grande partie du pays. Seul l’ouest de la France a connu un ensoleillement sensiblement supérieur à la moyenne**.

Les derniers jours de l’hiver ont par ailleurs été marqués par le passage d’une très sévère tempête baptisée Xynthia. Elle a concerné de très nombreuses régions, mais tout particulièrement celles situées de la Vendée au Nord-Est. Sur ces régions, les vents ont dépassé 150 km/h sur les côtes et les reliefs et ont souvent atteint 120 à 130 km/h en plaine à l’intérieur des terres.
