Reflections on Parkinson's fundraising ride from Pauillac to La Livinière (Minverois)
Jim and Carole @the Cité of Carcassonne
A week yesterday Carole and I were riding through quiet, rolling roads through the Minervois towards our final destination – Domaine Ostal Cazes at La Livinière. Fortunately we had the wind behind us as we passed by vineyards interspersed by garrique and other crops.
In direct contrast yesterday afternoon I foolishly decided to go for a ride in London at the time of the afternoon school run and the start of the Friday weekend rush hour. This made riding on most of the roads no fun at all and I cut short my ride. Such a contrast to peaceful rural France whether it is in the Languedoc or the Loire.
Although there are considerate drivers in London, there are still far too many that speed, drive recklessly and dangerously with little thought for other road users whether they are fellow drivers, cyclists or pedestrians.
Riding a bike in London means that you can never relax – always trying to anticipate the next danger or the next impatient idiot.
Much of our five day ride from Pauillac to La Livinière was along the towpath of the Garonne and then the Midi Canals. There was a good tarred track all the way from the western end of the Garonne canal a few miles east of Langon all the way to the western border of the Aude départment. This meant that we could ride our road bikes along by the canal and benefit from the shade and tranquility – no vehicles! Unfortunately in the Aude the track becomes rough so we had to take to the normal roads to avoid punctures.
During our ride we had to negotiate two major cities: Bordeaux and Toulouse. Both proved to be cycle friendly and easy to get through. Toulouse entirely on cycle lanes – some shared with pedestrians, while Bordeaux was easy once we reached the new Pont Jacques Chaban Delmas Bridge. The new bridge includes a dedicated cycle lane which then on the eastern side connects to a pedestrian/cycleway that takes you right through and out to the south of the city. In Toulouse we were able to follow the Garonne Canal until it became the Canal du Midi.
Clearly both Bordeaux and Toulouse a much smaller than London but it was striking, despite the new cycle highways in the centre, London lags far behind these French cities.
Sadiq Khan, the current London Mayor, makes the right sounds about improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists alike. However, after a little more than a year in power I sense that he has achieved little and that he is better at hot air than taking practical steps.
Khan appointed Will Norman, as his new walking and cycling supremo on a salary of £98,000 a year. A google search on Norman brings up no recently entries, so you have to wonder what is he up to?
We are very pleased that our ride across Southern France has to date raised £5,587.19
including gift aid. Donations continue to be very welcome – please donate here Together we can make a difference to people with Parkinson's. Thanks!

Phew it's hot!
John and Trevor: the quail gatherers
Some photos from yesterday's Fête des Vins @Boulevard Napoléon, La Livinière, Minervois. It was very hot and Fergus, John and Trevor did a sterling job looking after the barbecue despite the intense heat from both the sun and the fire.
Delicious menu: brains on toast, barbecued quail, Cantal Salers and cherries accompanied by wines from Boulevard Napoléon and some other growers. The Boulevard Napoléon 2014 Grenache Gris and 2014 Bien Autre, the second wine in their red stable, were especially good.

Parkinson's grand cru fundraising ride: we crossed the finishing line
Riders and our helper with Fergus Henderson:
Jim, Lynda, Fergus, Carole and Max
Soon after 11am this morning we completed our fundraising ride for Parkinson's UK when we arrived at Ostal Cazes in La Livinière, Minervois. Although we actually started at Lafite, we rode past the entrance to Lynch Bages as well as the Hotel Cordeillan-Bages on our way out of Pauillac on Monday, so we essentially rode from Cazes to Cazes.
We set off a little after 9am from La Cité of Carcassonne. After a short ride on the busy main road from Carcassonne to Thébes, we enjoyed quiet roads through the Minervois passing by Laure-Minervois.
The fundraising total continues to rise – we are close to £5000 with gift and have crossed the £4K mark without the aid. Current total is £4075.00 and £4843.75 if you include gift aid. We are very grateful to our 98 donors! We are still aiming to reach £6000.
To donate please click here. Many thanks – together we make a difference.

Parkinson's Fundraising Ride: Pauillac to La Livinière – tomorrow's the day

– during this morning's short training ride
Grapes as petits pois in Pauillac this morning
The moment of truth is now hurtling towards us – we start our ride from Pauillac to La Livinière early tomorrow morning.
During today it was very hot but is considerably cooler tonight with a wind from the west. Hopefully it will be a little cooler tomorrow for the ride – plenty of suntan lotion is likely to be essential during this week.
The ride tomorrow starts at Lafite on the D2 with a quick op before heading down the D2 – rote des châteaux – through Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, Macau, Bordeaux and then along the eastern side of the Garonne to Langon, where we spend our first night.
We are delighted that our fundraising for Parkinson's Uk continues to go well. With gift aid we are now at £3583.75. Please support our fundraising here and help us to make our target of £6K. All donations will be much appreciated.

Parkinson's Ride: heading to Pauillac
Bikes attached and we are ready to go!
Today we traveled from the Loire down to Pauillac using the ferry from Blaye to Lamarque to get across the Gironde.
Passing the fortress of Blaye
– a UNESCO site
Abroad the ferry for the short trip across the Gironde
We start our ride from Pauillac to La Livinière on Monday 12th to raise money for Parkinson UK. Our fundraising page is here and we are delighted that we have to date raised just under £3000 with gift aid and this before we have done even one serious pedal stroke, which starts from Monday morning. We are extremely grateful to our 50 donors. Fortunately there is still time for further donations to swell the total.
Our ride has been inspired by Fergus Henderson of St John Restaurant in London. Fergus has had Parkinson's since 1988.

Parkinson's ride: les étapes, the stages: Monday 12th - Friday 16th June 2017
From one famous cru to another: Pauillac to La Livinière
Our challenge is to cycle from Pauillac, close to the Atlantic coast, to La Livinière in the Minervois, not very far from Mediterranean – a distance of roughly 500 km, just over 300 miles!

Pauillac
is the home of some of the most famous Bordeaux vineyards - Château
Lafite Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Mouton Rothschild. Our
destination is La Livinière where we will, hopefully, catch the
Boulevard Napoléon Fête du Vin, celebrating the wine of Fergus Henderson
and Trevor Gulliver, co-founders and co-owners of London’s St John
Restaurant. The wine is made from their vineyards high up in the hills
of the Minervois.
It
was at last year’s wonderful Fete du Vin at La Livinière that we came
up with the idea of doing a charity ride and Fergus, who has had
Parkinson’s since 1998, was the inspiration for selecting Parkinson’s UK as our chosen charity. Fergus is a well-known and highly regarded British chef and author of The Whole Beast: Nose to tail eating, which explains his philosophy and provides some of his innovative recipes that make use of all parts of the animal.

We have sought to build in incentives to complete each stage. On Monday night, for instance, we will be staying at Claude Darroze in Langon, the market town of Sauternes. Ever since August 1979 we have enjoyed memorable meals at here. Then on Thursday night, the last evening before we reach La Livinière, we will stay at Le Clos Fleuri in Castelnaudary to enjoy a traditional cassoulet. Fortunately the next day's stage is short!

Another inspiration for our ride is a long-time friend of ours, Ivor Morris, who was a very able and keen racing cyclist and founder of the London Fire Brigade Cycling Club. It was Ivor who first inspired us to take up serious cycling and get into time trialling in the late seventies and the eighties. Ivor died in early January 2008 after suffered from Parkinson’s for many years. We have very fond memories of dropping down to Ivor’s to watch the short snippets of news on the Tour de France, long before it became a popular spectator sport.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition for which there is as yet no known cure although there are hopes of a breakthrough in the near future. Parkinson’s UK plays a very important role in supporting and promoting research and driving better care, treatments and quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s.
To date the full-time cyclists for the whole distance are Jim Budd and Carole Macintyre. We have the invaluable support of Lynda Maple who will drive the support car, carry our gear and, if necessary, rescue us en route! We are delighted that at least one brave soul, Max Poynter Hall from St John Restaurant, will be joining us for one stage of the journey. We are looking for others!

Parkinson's is a progressive neurological condition. This means that it causes problems in the brain and gets worse over time.
There's currently no cure for Parkinson's and we don't yet know why people get the condition.
But there are lots of different treatments, therapies and support available to help you manage the condition as well as continuing research.
