The Asian hornet approaches

Good article in La Nouvelle République today about the spread of the Asian hornet into Indre-et-Loire. This hornet arrived by accident in Bordeaux in 2004 in a cargo from China and has spread from there.  As far as Indre-et-Loire is concerned it has now reached Beaumont-Village, Genillé and Montrésor.

It is smaller but more aggressive than the traditional hornet and may attack anyone who gets within five metres of its nest. Typically it nests in trees or in roofs. It feeds on bees.

Anyone spotting one of these hornets in Indre-et-Loire should get in touch with GDS 37 (groupement de défense sanitaire) on 02.47.48.37.58 or Apiculture 37 on 02.47.95.94.90.

I believe a nest was found and destroyed in Champigny-sur-Veude (Indre et Loire) towards the end of the summer

I heard on my star radio (at least one that was NOT killed by video!) that, in spite of his skill, specific training and adequate vestimentary protection, a fireman was stung in the face (and admitted to hospital) last week in the Pyrénées Orientales, while trying to destroy an Asian hornets nest in our department.
