2009 Louis Roederer International Wine Writer Awards

This evening on the top floor (40th) of London's famous Gherkin the winners of the 2009 Louis Roederer International Wine Writer Awards were announced. Since Roederer took over the awards from Lanson Champagne, they have taken them to a new level. Tonight's venue was amazing with spectacular views over London – once you had got through the airport style security on the ground floor. The awards were presented by Frédéric Rouzaud (MD of Roederer) and Charles Metcalfe (chair of the judges).

Good to see that the awards are becoming more international with one winner, Natalie MacLean, being based in Canada. "The aim is to become still more international," said Charles Metcalfe in his speech. It was noticeable that Frédéric Rouzaud was more relaxed this year – making several self-depreciating jokes in his speech.
