2014 Tour de France: The cobbles – carnage indeed – Chris Froome out

I predicted carnage this morning in my preview for the stage and carnage it was indeed with Chris Froome abandoning after two or three falls even before the start of the cobbles. This coming after a fall yesterday. His wrists and arms seemed very painful and he was having trouble walking.

Lars Boom took his first Tour de France stage win with a great and gutsy ride.

Vincenzo Nibali and his Astana team was very impressive today. He now has a lead of 44 seconds over his nearest rival – Peter Sagan – as the second placed rider (Fuglsang) is his team mate. Overall the big loser today was Alberto Contador, who is now 2:37 behind Nibali.

Tomorrow looks like it will be another sprinters' stage. Will anyone manage to beat Marcel Kittel? There might just be a chance for a breakaway to succeed if the peloton decides to have a recovery day after today's brutal race.
