Dangers of swimming in Loire explained after 10-year-old drowned

Amboise and the Loire, which claimed the life of 10-year-old on Monday

Following Monday's downing of a ten-year-old boy in the Loire at Amboise on Monday, La Nouvelle République has an article on the dangers of La Loire, which can appear deceptively tranquil. The river has strong currents, particularly around the bridge at Amboise, and water levels can vary dramatically – shallow water abruptly giving way to much deeper trenches. The young boy, who drowned on Monday, is only the latest in a long line of victims.

For this reason swimming in the Loire at Amboise and in some other Loire communes is banned

Long time ago (1993 or so, I guess), we « sailed » the Sarthe and Mayenne for one week on one of those “be-the-skipper-yourself” boats you can hire. Very first experience ever and Belgians are not the best known old salts you can think of.
By unlucky chance, we ended up sailing the Loire itself (flat-keeled !) at the level of Angers, slowly drifting towards the “barrage” and with “big” professional units all around the place. The fluvial police helped us ashore and they were not that pleased with the happening.
Yes, the Loire can be quite deceptive ....
Fortunately, the exquisite restaurant (now dismantled, I’m afraid) Pavillon Le Quéré was still in full business and our purses were fuller than at the present time. An evening meal at the place put all to rest! It is a good memory with my father, moreover: sander .... from the Loire it was.
