10-year-old boy drowns in Loire@Amboise

The Loire at Amboise – deceptively dangerous

This morning La Nouvelle République leads with the drowning yesterday of a ten-year old boy in the Loire at Amboise carried away by a current. The boy's identity hasn't yet been released but his family lives in Tours.

The Loire can often look gentle and inviting but this can be terribly deceptive. There are dangerous currents and treacherous sand banks. Swimming in the Loire is banned. It is a river that must be treated with great care. Over the years it has claimed many victims.

Reminds me that I tried to swim across the Rhine in Switzerland many years ago. However, I soon realised it wasn't a good idea and returned safe to shore.
