Bouncing back on both your pretty images and you mentioning what’s happening in London, and elsewhere in the realm now, I must admit I find all this rioting alarming and also unsettling. You know I can be very critical of some aspects of British society, but one of the great honours of yours was the policy towards aliens. Whereas most continental countries would try to get them out of their borders (look at the Sangatte episode for instance), GB kept accepting a lot of otherwise “unwanted” citizens. You don’t need ID on your territory and the police used to walk around unarmed till not that long ago. Habeas corpus is much more real on your side of the Channel than over here, and so on, and so on. Therefore, it is really unfair this near-“state of emergency” should happen in Britain. Finally, it will fuel the pretence and nonsense of extreme right activists all over Europe, urging their governments towards more authority, more Law and Order, more brutality.
Education is of the essence, and earning a decent living, not coercion.
