#TDF13: Cannondale offensive wins Sagan the stage + big lead in Green Jersey

Team Cannondale pulled off a big coup today by dropping all the leading sprinters on the toughest climb of the day – the 2nd Category Col de la Croix de Mounis – and then holding off the long chase organised by the three leading sprint teams. The sprinters eventually gave up after some 50K of chasing. Then Peter Sagan had enough left to win the sprint in Albi comfortably after appearing to be blocked in with in the last 500 metres. This moves his total stage wins up to four – see list of all time stage wins here.

Sagan picked up maximum points for the Green Jersey on the stage by taking the intermediate sprint and the final gallop.

Green Jersey Points
1. Peter Sagan 224
2. André Griepel 130
3. Mark Cavendish 119
4. Alexander Kristoff 111
5. Edvald Boasson Hagen 88

Before the end of the first week it is already looking as though Peter Sagan is virtually uncatchable for Green.

This is far from the case for the Yellow Jersey with Daryl Impey holding onto the Yellow he took yesterday. Virtually all of the leading contenders are close together as the race heads into the mountains tomorrow. One significant casualty is Jurgen van den Broeck who was, very unfortunately, forced to abandon after a crash at the end of Stage 5. In 2010 and 2012 he took 4th place overall.
