More Lisbon photos: Vasco da Gama Bridge

The Tagus@Oriente – a pontoon, the river and part of the Vasco da Gama Bridge

This bridge is always impressive – its size and length. The longest bridge in Europe at a total of 17.2 kms. It took 18 months to build and opened on 29th March 1998 in time for Expo 98, which marked the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the sea route from Europe to India. The walk along the Tagus from close to Oriente Station and the Vasco da Gama shopping towards the bridge is a popular stroll – as well as attracting runners and cyclists.

  1. You’re .......
The bridge, the Mosteiro dos Jéronimos and “A Fábrica dos pastéis de Belém” (aka Antiga Pastelaria de Belém), with lots and lots of young Lisboets spreading on the adjacent lawns, powdered sugar and cinnamon all over the place .... a dream for any insulin merchant.
I’ve actually kept my word and we had 6 pieces yesterday evening (Christine eating only 2). I send you a snapshot as evidence, on your mailbox. Liquid goodie was nothing less than my very last bottle of Ramos Pinto’s 20 y old tawny, a gift from Jõa Almeida himself.
Before that, exquisite edible crab it was (a large female which I freed from her daily suffering through fast immersion in my “court-bouillon”), with not the best Alvarinho I had, but still OK (13 vol % plus a bit of unnecessary residual) and the only one easily available in Perpignan.
In a way, it was a case of “tourteau before the torta”!
