My most interesting wine of Loire Salon 2012: Climat No 2
Climat No2, Vin de France, Lionel Gosseaume
Lionel Gosseaume (Stand H137) has finally bottled his Meslier Saint-François, an old grape from Touraine which has virtually disappeared. It can be very productive and once used to be exported to Germany to make sparkling wine because of its high acidity. Lionel has blended his Meslier Saint-François, whose yield he limited to 45 hl/ha, with an equal amount of Sauvignon Blanc. It was aged for two years in an old foudre. Climat No2 has rich, very ripe opulent fruit but well balanced with marked acidity and is fascinatingly different. Very limited production – only 2000 bottles.

...and my most interesting producer from last year's Salon - a great discovery. You may remember I was hunting a juicy Cab Franc with zero success (turned out I already had the best value wine there, in the shape of Baudry's Chinon les Granges), when you recommended I look at Simon Hawkins'Domaine du Fontenay (http://www.leaandsandeman.co.uk/wine-producer/domaine-du-fontenay-1485-04.html). But in truth I'd already found Lionel Gosseaume's delicately fruity Touraine 'Marcottes' Gamay, and his interestingly fleshy Sauvignon 'Sauterelles'.(http://www.leaandsandeman.co.uk/wine-producer/domaine-de-pierre-1482-04.html). Did not make it to the salon this year so look forward to trying this one next week.
Everyone who has tried it so far during the Salon has been intrigued and loved it. I think Lionel will have a job holding on to his 2000 bottles!
Thanks Charles and Cathy. Yes 2000 bottles are not going to go very far!
