Dinner with friends enjoying an old sheep

Tuesday night we had a most enjoyable dinner with friends and colleagues in fashionable Limehouse. We started with an attractively round Crémant de Jura from Domaine Pêcheur – Christian and Patricia – made from 100% Chardonnay.

We were then treated to and spoilt with a bottle of their 'house' wine – 1987 Mouton-Rothschild bought at Oslo Airport sometime during the 1990s at a bargain price.  Although 1987 is by no means a stellar vintage in Bordeaux the 1987 drank very well – softly textured with silky tannins and considerable length. The label is by Hans Erni. It is a tribute to Baron Philippe de Rothschild's last vintage as he died in January 1988. Erni himself lived to be 105 – dying in 2015.

1994 5-Puttonyos, Tokaji Aszu, St. Stephan's Crown

Our third wine was the 1994 5-Puttonyos, Tokaji Aszu, St. Stephan's Crown – quite richly sweet with definite oxidised notes but which worked both with the chesse that included an excellent raw milk Caerphilly from Waitrose and home-made green tea ice cream.
