Forest Hill, London SE23 – third sinkhole

Scene on Perry Vale – road closed.

Although London's Forest Hill is becoming more fashionable after many years in the doldrums, it has recently been hit by three successive sink holes. The first two affected the railway. This one Perry Vale, which is just by the railway, caused traffic chaos on Friday evening. It remains to be seen whether this part of South London will disappear through subsidence.

  1. Looks like London needs an Inspector General of Quarries, like Paris has had since the 18th century. After a series of dramatic subsidences and sinkholes appearing the mammoth task of mapping Paris' underground was undertaken. The city maintains a department to continue mapping and monitoring to this day.
