It is fascinating to look at Sunday's election results across the Loire and, especially, regarding a selection of wine communes.

It is no surprise that as France's longest river La Loire straddles four of France's 15 Regions: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val-de-Loire and Pays de la Loire. It could even be five if we include Bretagne. This time the spoils are equally divided with the Right winning Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Pays de la Loire and the Left taking Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Centre-Val-de-Loire.

In yesterday's post it was difficult to discern patterns with apparently very similar communes voting in quite different ways. This continues today with this look at western Touraine and Saumur. I note that Bourgueil is strong left, while Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, whose wines sell more easily than those of Bourgueil and for more money, is comfortably National Front.

Or take three communes in Chinon: Chinon itself, Cravant-les-Coteaux and the adjoining commune of Panzoult. Chinon clearly left, Cravant equally clearly right while Panzoult is National Front albeit by a margin of less than 2%.

Again voter participation is impressive in comparison to that in the UK for similar elections.
