I spoke to Claude Papin of Château Pierre Bise and the president of the Quarts' syndicat on Saturday morning. He told me that they had now finished picking in the Quarts de Chaume – as usual Pierre-Bise was the last to finish. Claude said the third tri was the best and that he had been picking around 22˚ potential.
Although Claude didn't think that the 2015 vintage, despite recent favourable weather will be as good as 2011, it is still promising both in quality and, unusually in volume. It is rare for producers who make genuine Quarts de Chaume to come anywhere near to the now maximum permitted yield of 20 hl/ha. However, this year such is the generosity of nature that they are applying for a dérogation for a few producers as they have made over the maximum, while remaining well over the 18˚ potential minimum.
It looks like in 2015 that those who had the patience to wait were rewarded.....
