2009 Les Romains, Sancerre, Domaine Fouassier

Much of today has been spent updating the Loire section for the future 2017 edition of Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book, which will be due out in September 2016.

To relax once all the entries have been updated – will have to check tomorrow that I haven't missed anything – I opened this 2009 Les Romains, Sancerre from Domaine Fouassier. Back in 2009 they were in conversion to being organic, they are now, under the impulse of the younger generation – Benoît and Paul, biodynamic.

Decidedly rich and powerful this 2009 is typical of this Sancerre vintage where hail reduced the crop and a fine summer and autumn pushed up the sugar levels – this little brute comes in a 15% and possibly a bit more. Too many glasses and the effect will be decidedly relaxing!

Les Romains is a single vineyard on flint close to Sancerre town – the Vacherons also have vines here from which their well-known cuvée comes.

The hail storm came on the day after the 2009 Tour de France passed through the area – Menetou-Salon, Sancerre and Pouilly – a stage that was won by Mark Cavendish.
