The long-standing food market opposite the Cais do Sodré railway station has recently been renovated. The market stall continue but there is now a central food area where it is possible to choose to graze from a wide selection of stalls from artisan hamburgers, to sushi, suckling pig sandwiches, delicious octopus salad, fine steak tartare etc plus various hams. Not forgetting the chance to try a range of wines, spirits and cocktails.
The area was previously the run-down the home of down and outs – hopefully they have now been accommodated elsewhere.
The grazing part of the Mercado is open until midnight from Sunday to Wednesday and until 2am from Thursday to Saturday, although the market stalls close in the early afternoon.
As a further bonus the Mercado has free WiFi.
Well worth trying.

Central grazing area with seating for many
but apparently not enough for busy times
Wine shop
The ceiling – pity the fans weren't switched on for
much of our time there as the heat was the one downside
Suckling pig
Very tasty octopus salad
Suckling pig sandwich and Portuguese fish and chips
You know how most Portuguese country restaurants and snack-bars will notify their patrons they actually serve the suckling pig, leitão, particularly in Bairrada where the dish is over-typical: simply by "há", literally "there is". Over ten years now since I set foot on Lusitanian ground for the last time, and Christine never was there. I long for it. Tenho saudades de este !
