2014 Tour de France to start in Yorkshire

2010 Tour de France banner@Pauillac

The 2014 edition of Le Tour de France will start in Yorkshire. The first two stages will be held in Yorkshire – first one in Leeds, while the third stage will feature a finish in London – already pencilled in by Mark Cavendish? Details here and here

This will be the fourth time that the Tour has visited the UK – 1974, 1994 and 2007. It is a mark of the growth of cycling in the UK, in particular Bradley Wiggins winning this year's race, and the success of the Tour's last visit in 2007 that Le Tour has made such a speedy return to these shores.

  1. Why not Iceland?
They'd better rename it Europe Tour

  2. Hervé. This is nothing new: Le Tour has long started from time to time outside France. You are just miffed that in 2014 it isn't once again starting in Belgium.

  3. Ee, by gum !!

I hope the cyclists get chance to sample proper Yorkshire beer and food while they're in the area.

  4. Blimey, I thought you were joking. Cycling in Yorkshire is nice, though.

  5. Toured Y ‘shire on two wheels myself several times, in the early ‘80ies, but I was “powered by Honda”. Kinsgton u H is the landing place of the ferries from Zeebrugge, as you know, and an adequate town to start a journey to Scotland. Almost lost my life three times in doing so. First one on top of a hill in the Dales, while I was driven to the soft verge at high speed by a dreadful gust of wind just after overtaking a tourism bus. The strength of it literally swept me sideways for a good ten feet and we just escaped fatal outcome by very lucky chance. Second one was while having lunch in a Chinese restaurant in Harrogate: the Madras was so spicy we just choked. Third one was close to the Brontë’s parsonage: we ate overmuch scones and clotted cream and had to puke our way to the bike, in great distress.
