Caspar Auchterlonie: 28 December 1967–10th April 2012

Caspar Auchterlonie

Very shocked and sorry to hear of the death yesterday of writer and wine judge Caspar Auchterlonie at the young age of 44. Although I knew that he had some health problems including at least one operation, I was very shocked to hear this very sad news.

Caspar was full of life and good humour and had established the Own Label Awards. Here is a profile of Caspar. My thoughts are with his family.

Joe Wadsack's memories and appreciation of Caspar here.

  1. What terrible news. Caspar was a true gent and a wine over whose love of wine was deliciously infective. Many condolences to his family, he will be greatly missed.

Very sad to hear this too. Caspar was a great guy, clever, witty, kind, always a pleasure to spend time with. A tragic loss.

  3. Although remembered in the wine world, Caspar will also be sorely missed in the sporting arena - although a cricketer, I mainly enjoyed Caspar's company as goal keeper for the various teams of the HAC for whom he still turned out.

Particular hockey memories include the Tour to Le Touquet in 2003 (and the fantastic wine he chose... "I can't believe they're selling this for 30 euros" was a delighted and frequent cry) and Caspar's role as The Judge.

    We will miss him.
