1989 Lanson Champagne
We started our Christmas day family lunch with a magnum of 1989 Lanson, which showed very well with richness from this hot vintage but also good, fresh acidity providing balance. This was one of six magnums that was part of my Champagne Lanson Noble Cuvée Award which I won back in 1997 for work on exposing the Champagne for the millennium investment scams. The Noble Cuvée proved to be a far better investment in pleasure than all the often poor quality Champagnes that were flogged to unsuspecting punters back in 1996 and 1997 by snake oil scamsters on the premise that come the millennium there would be a huge shortage of Champagne. Of course it proved to be entirely erroneous.
Well deserved, Jim. I wonder what you will get next for the Campogate investigation. The Pouillytzer prize?
ReplyDeleteI should talk with Benoît about this. The prize would be some 29,000 ml of Pouilly. Half chasselas, half fumé.
I would dare say : « Fuissé-vous un amateur, je ne Pouilly point vous en vendre ».
ReplyDeleteAs everybody knows, in this case (of twelve) : « A char donné, on ne regarde pas les essieux », which translates roughly as « One doesn’t look a gift wagon in the axles”.
And now, s’thing totally different. I just read the story of your poor great-great-great-grand-uncle, a Billy by name. He hung because his shirt was found ugly by the master-at-arms. A sad end for “the handsome sailor”.
By the way, I purchased this book from the shop underneath the Light House on the Île de Ré: money well spent and a nice place to visit.
Merry X-mas and – soon – a very happy New Year to you, Jim.
Many thanks Gents!
