2011 Loire vintage: Muscadet difficult

Picking@Domaine Pierre Luneau-Papin

I spoke this morning to Marie Chartier (Domaine Pierre Luneau-Papin – Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine).

Marie: "We started last Tuesday. So far it has all been hand picking. We have now finished the crus and are on the Butte de la Roche today. I expect that parcels that we hand pick will be finished by Thursday or Friday. Next week will be the young vines which will be picked by machine.

"This really is a year of the vigneron. We have a lot of rot due to the rain during the summer and having to discard about 30% of the crop. Because of the difficult conditions we have hired more pickers this year."

Elsewhere flooding in Bourgueil following heavy rain on Saturday (3rd). The local infant school was out of action for the kids returning to class after the holidays yesterday.

The forecast here through to Friday 16th September looks much better with no rain forecast apart from a small amount (4 mm) this Sunday.
