1928 Solera Maury

Maury 1928 Solera

On Tuesday as well as dropping up to Chalk Farm for Bibendum's America's most wanted tasting I also went to the Sud de France tasting in central London. There were around 60 wines on show from Languedoc-Roussillon forming a preview for this year's Sud de France Festival in London from 17th to 30th September.

This 1928 Solera from Maury was easily my top wine from this tasting. Made from 100% Grenache it is a marvellously balance of rich dried fruits including prune and apricot – stunning concentration leading to a very austere finish. Distributed in the UK by Richards Walford it has a retail price of £17.99 for 50cls. Great value for the quality.

Ever since I first came across France's vins doux naturels in 1989 I have certainly found the best of them way more interesting and complex than many Ports, whose popularity in the UK may have much to do with the upper classes' obsession with nannies and milk puddings.

  2. It certainly is Bob. Whether it is available in Alberta is another question.
