Brief conversation this morning with Lee Manning of Deloitte. Most of the remaining 48 shops are closing but Simon Baile is in the process of buying six or seven shops. Henry Young is not involved in this deal. The Oddbins shop on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh has been sold to a separate company with the brand name sold to another unnamed company. It would appear that Baile has not bought the brand name.
From anon:
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sure you knew before we did Jim, but all of Head office have been told we'll be made redundant on Tuesday
Anon. Thanks sorry to hear this. No I hadn't heard before. Good luck in finding a new job.
ReplyDeleteThat's it. Finished for all of us. I still can't believe this is the end of Oddbins. The end of an era. I'm really going to miss everyone I've worked with over the past decade. Good luck to Paul, Sarah, Luke, Tom, Jan, Jeannette, Emma, Simon, Cat, Eithne, Cal, Jim, Ayo and everyone else at H.O. losing their jobs.
ReplyDeleteAnd all the best to those packing up their shops over the next few days. It's been a pleasure.

Much dismay at the new wines arriving at the remaining Oddbins/Whittalls stores this week - not even cheap and cheerful lines, but everpriced and nasty ones. The kind of stuff you see in newsagents, only worse. How much does Whittalls know (or care) about what Oddbins stood for?
ReplyDeleteOddbins staff aren't the types to be robotically on-message with this range either - if they think the wines are shit, they're not going to lie to their customers. Grateful as I am for keeping my job, I fear there's going to be a major culture-clash between EFB and the Oddbins staff they've taken on.
