A post with no connection to the Loire but went to a remarkable concert by Cesaria Evora last night at the Barbican Centre. Although I have loved her music for some time this was the first time that I had seen her live. I hadn't realised how small she is – a little dumpy figure moving slowly about the stage. When she sings Cesaria stands motionless virtually without expression and her powerful voice emerges apparently without effort. It may well be that she has to conserve her energy following a stroke in 2008.
If you ignored her band, one could imagine that she was at home doing the ironing or washing up! In contrast her excellent, lively well-drilled backing band spend much of the night bouncing about and raising a storm.
If you get to the chance to see her perform it is well worth it.
