Another VDQS decision: Les Vins du Thouarsais

The small VDQS of Thouarsais has apparently decided against applying for AC status. Presumably these wines will be labelled VDP du Val de Loire once VDQS disappears in 2011.

The Thouarsais' vines are found to the east and south east of the town of Thouars, some 18 kilometres south of Montreuil-Bellay. 15 communes have the right to the VDQS appellation but most of the production is centred in Oiron-Bilazais. There are five producers with 25 hectares planted making 1000 hls.

I'm trying to remember whether I have ever tasted a Thouarsais wine. I may have tasted one from François Gigon, whose wines have long been imported into the UK by Yapp Brothers. I must make an special effort to taste some of these wines before their VDQS disappears.

  1. Interesting "problem". I guess Jancis Robinson will have to produce yet another edition of "The World Atlas of Wine" to coincide with the phasing out of VDQS.

  2. Jan-Tore: I trust that Jancis and Hugh are hard at work at this very moment on the new edition.........
