Didier, perhaps the most famous and certainly one of the Loire’s best producers, was killed yesterday in a microlite aircraft accident in the Dordogne. Some reports say it was near Cognac. He was 52.
Didier made his reputation with his Pouilly-Fumés, which completely transcended this all too often disappointing appellation. Later he bought a vineyard in Jurançon and then a small parcel of vines on Les Monts Damnés in Chavignol. It is believed that he had recently bought more vines in Sancerre.
This is a huge shock and such a sad waste – yet I guess Didier always was attracted by dangerous sports – first sidecar racing and then husky racing.
My condolences to Didier’s family. It is not known whether Benjamin and Charlotte, Didier's two eldest chilren, will take over running the domaine. Benjamin was apparently intending to set up on his own (see Oliver Styles' Decanter interview of 2007: /www.decanter.com/specials/268133.html) and Charlotte had just recently returned from three years at Faiveley.
